The cold weather and constant rise and fall in temperature can leave skin dry, chaffed and scaly. While there are many products available on the market to soothe dry skin, in this climate extra measures have to be taken.

It is very important to keep our skin lubricated and well moisturized will prevent the skin from looking dry. Here are some other steps to help keep your skin moist, supple and smooth.

1. Apply moisturizer as soon as youb get out of the shower. Your skin will still be warm and thus more penetrable and recpetive to the ingredients in the product.

2. Don’t be stingy with your application. Use a good amount of product to cover every area needed.

3. For skin that is extremely dry apply an occlusive product such as Vaseline or baby oil gel over your moisturizer to help lock the product in and prevent it from evaporating before it is absorbed.

4. Use a good product to begin with. It is true that ” you get what you pay for” ! So if you are using a bargain brand product, you can expect bargain brand results. Invest in a good product such as Curel, Lubriderm, Aveeno or Nivea.

Greetings Sky Loungers!
Flowers are blooming, birds are chirping and the breeze is blowing; spring is HERE! With all the pleasures of this season, no wonder its one of my favorite times of the year. I would like to share some skin care tips to use this spring to ensure you look and feel your best.

Climate change encourages a lot of changes to occur in the body that can affect the health of your skin. As an example; Oilier skin types tend to become more oily; drier skin types become more dry. Individuals with light to moderate acne will notice an increase in the amount of flare ups that occur. Skin conditions can develop from a number of things such as: improper product use, lack of maintenance, lack of proper nutrition, insufficient sleep, etc. As a skin care professional my goal is to keep my clients informed and aware of all the methods they can use to have health, younger looking skin.
Here are some basic tips to promote healthy, vibrant skin:

1.Drink plenty of water -I cannot stress the importance of this! Drinking water is one of the best things you can do for your body. The human body is composed of 90% water which is essential to the functions performed by the body daily such as cell reproduction and the elimination of waste material. Lack of sufficient water intake can lead to dehydration in the skin which depletes your skins natural barrier protection layer. An impaired barrier can trigger other conditions such as dryness, flaking and the formation of blackheads, papules and pustules.

2.Use products formulated for your skin type –This is another major factor that affects the look and feel of your skin. Every 6 months you should have a professional SKIN ANALYSIS to determine your skin type and have home care recommended for you. Using a product on your skin that is too harsh or not designed to treat an issue you have causes a negative effect on the skins barrier protection layer which as discussed leads to the development of more problems. Most products on the market are massed produced in the following categories:
	Normal
	Acne
	Dry
	Combination
	Oily
And that would be perfectly fine if everyone could fall into one of those categories. An individuals’ skin is as unique as their fingerprint and is determined by genetics, lifestyle, home care and other factors such as sleep, stress level and diet. With all those variables it is imperative to seek professional advice when selecting the proper products for home care use.

3.Go to bed with a freshly washed face – After a long day or a night on the town you are often tired and not in the mood to remove makeup or wash your face. When you fail to do so this is what happens….During the night while your skin is regenerating , all the cosmetic remnants, debris and oil sits on the skin blocking follicles and encouraging bacterial growth… I won’t give any more details, but I’m sure you get the message. In addition to a clean face, clean pillow cases will also help your skin stay clear.

4.Get enough sleep- Getting the proper amount of sleep will help you look and feel a lot better.
These tips paired with a regular facial will help keep your skin in optimal condition. Sky Lounge Skin Care offers complimentary skin analysis to help you understand your skin type, and design a treatment program to give you the results you desire.

While we are here I would like to tell you about some of the new things happening at Sky Lounge Skin Care.

1. Stress- the male hormone, testosterone is produced in the adrenal glands for females. Stress activates the adrenal gland to produce extra hormones, which eventually result in flare-ups in acne sensitive pores.
2. Sunlight- UV rays from the sun damage and irritate the skin causing premature aging in the form of fine lines and wrinkles. Without proper sun protection these UV rays reach down into the dermis to the papillary layer and destroy collagen which cannot be reproduced. Most sun damage doesn’t become noticeable until years after it occurred.
3. Seasons- Testosterone production in women is higher in October and lower in May. Fluctuations of these hormones are apparently triggered by the changing day lengths or specifically by the exposure to UV light.
4. Climate- Acne is more severe in hot, humid places. Steam rooms, saunas, and hot tubs cause swelling of the skin, which closes the pores and traps in debris. Colder climates tend to deplete the moisture and hydration levels in skin, impairing the natural protective barrier and causing irritation and dryness.
5. Pressure- Pressure or any kind of rubbing or manipulation makes acne worse. Manipulations encourage pustules to rupture and spill into the pore and causing more severe break outs. Any item that constricts rubs, exerts prolonged pressure, overheats, or keeps skin sweaty and moist can cause problems.
6. Picking- Picking acne lesions will promote scarring by driving the inflammation and infection deeper into the skin.
7. Diet- Diet does not cause acne however; ingredients and substances in the diet may aggravate acne. Excessive intake of Iodine (fish, iodized salt and certain dairy products): once ingested and mixed with the bloodstream, the excess is secreted through the oil glands which irritates the pore and can cause acne break-outs.
8. Drugs- Certain drugs can induce acne in the skin if they cause hormonal fluctuations.
9. Menstrual Cycle-Ten days before the onset of menstruation can cause acne flare-ups due to the hormonal changes happening internally.
10. Pregnancy- Once again hormonal activity causes many changes in the skin. Flare ups may occur during the 1st trimester due to hormonal shift. During the 2nd and 3rd trimesters the body is flooded with extra estrogen which reduces sebum flow helping to regulate pore activity.
11. Birth Control Pills- birth control pills can work for you or against you. Pills with higher amounts of estrogen help to clear acne, while pills with higher amounts of testosterone can encourage acne flare ups.

I was thinking of the foods our skin loves and did some “surfing” and found this. (taken from LifeScript.com)

Your thighs shouldn’t be your only worry as you rip open that package of Cheetos. There’s a larger body part you should be concerned about: your skin. You can’t just shove junk food in your face and expect to have smooth, supple skin. But swap those cheese puffs for a cup of cottage cheese and you just might get glowing results. Read on for 10 yummy foods that’ll fill your belly AND nourish your skin. Plus: Take our quiz to find out if you’re skin care savvy…

You can’t always judge a book by it’s cover, but when it comes to your health, what shows on the outside is a reflection of what’s on the inside. A dull, dry complexion is a blinking neon sign that you’re not eating right. Lucky for you, you can put your best face forward with a better diet.

Face Food #1: Avocados
You had to know we couldn’t talk about face foods without mentioning avocados. This creamy, green fruit is abundant in essential oils and B-complex vitamins that nourish your skin, inside and out.

Niacin (vitamin B3) is especially important for healthy skin, and is found in abundance in avocados. As an anti-inflammatory, niacin soothes irritated skin and can calm red, blotchy skin. One avocado has 3.8 mg niacin – 27% of your daily need.

Blend half an avocado with yogurt and frozen berries to make a tasty morning smoothie. The creamy, nutty flavor will make you seriously re-think using bananas as a thickener. Keep reading for a great avocado face mask recipe that will solve your dry skin problems instantly. (See related story: 4 Tasty Beauty Recipes You Can Cook Up at Home)

Face Food #2: Mangoes
Mangoes have more than 80% of your daily requirements for vitamin A, which is why they’re such a great face food. Vitamin A maintains and repairs skin cells; a deficiency will result in a dry, flaky complexion. As an antioxidant, vitamin A also fights free radical damage that can prematurely age the skin. And with fewer than 70 calories per serving, this succulent fruit is the perfect pick for your figure, not just your face.

Face Food #3: Almonds
Not only is it a gorgeous shape for your eyes, almonds are also great for your complexion. With 150% of your daily need for vitamin E, it’s no wonder that getting a bit nutty is good for you.

Vitamin E’s rich oils moisturize dry skin, while its antioxidants protect against skin damage and premature aging of facial tissue.

Face Food #4: Cottage Cheese
Dairy isn’t just good for your bones, it’s great for your face, too. But it’s the selenium in cottage cheese, not the calcium, that has us really going wild for these creamy curds.

Selenium, an essential mineral, teams up with vitamin E as a powerful free radical-fighting antioxidant duo. Plus, it’s been touted to protect against skin cancer and even fight dandruff.

Face Food #5: Acerola Cherries
Your average cherry doesn’t supply a significant amount of vitamin C, but don’t tell that to this particular fruit.

One single Acerola cherry supplies 100% of your daily allowance for vitamin C, which is great news for your skin. As an antioxidant, vitamin C fights skin damage and wrinkles. It also plays a central role in the production of collagen, the structural protein in your skin.

Ain’t life just a bowl of cherries?

Face Food #6: Oysters
Whether they’re an aphrodisiac or not, oysters are certainly in love with your skin. As a rich source of zinc, oysters may help fight acne. Since zinc plays a role in sebum production, a deficiency may contribute to acne problems. (See related story: Get Rid of Body Acne)

Zinc not only helps clear up acne, it can also help boost elastin (the skin’s elastic protein) production with the help of vitamin C.

Face Food #7: Baked Potatoes
Unlike greasy French fries, a plump, steaming baked potato is actually good for your skin.

One baked potato eaten with the skin supplies 75% of your daily need for copper. This essential mineral works hand-in-hand with vitamin C and zinc to produce the elastin fibers that support skin structure. Too little copper in your diet can reduce your skin’s ability to heal and cause it to become rigid and lifeless.

Face Food #8: Mushrooms
This fungi isn’t just for shish kebabs and stir fries; it’s also rich in riboflavin, a B vitamin that’s vital to your skin. Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is involved in tissue maintenance and repair, but actually goes beyond basic skin care to improve skin blemishes caused by rosacea. This vitamin is so important for skin repair that the body will use up large amounts after sustaining a burn or wound, or undergoing surgery.

Face Food #9: Flaxseed Oil
It’s no secret that Omega 3s are great for your skin, but did you know that flaxseed oil is one of the best sources of this essential fatty acid? That’s great news if you’re not a fish-lover.

Just one teaspoon of flaxseed oil per day provides 2.5 grams of Omega 3s, which in turn hydrate the skin. Essential fatty acids also dilute sebum and unclog pores that can otherwise lead to acne.

Face Food #10: Wheat Germ
Don’t let the “germ” scare you – it’s actually just the embryo within a grain of wheat, and it’s very nutritious. Wheat germ is a good source of biotin, a B vitamin that is crucial to skin health. Biotin is so important to healthy skin that a mild deficiency can actually cause dermatitis, a skin condition characterized by itchy, scaly skin. Sprinkle wheat germ on yogurt for a tasty way to get more biotin in your diet.

Slather It On!
Don’t just eat these foods to nourish healthier skin from the inside out! Some make for great facial masks, too.

Try this avocado mask to instantly moisturize your skin:

1. Mash one whole avocado
2. Add 1 tsp flaxseed oil and 1 tsp honey
3. Mix together until smooth and creamy
4. Apply to face and let sit for 15-20 minutes
5. Rinse clean with warm water

Take care of your skin by eating right and having fun with your food. Drink plenty of water and exercise daily to flush out toxins.

And don’t put toxins right back in your body! Smoking damages healthy skin and makes it more prone to wrinkles and an ashen, gray color – not a pretty picture.

Finally, always wear sunscreen, especially on your face, whether it’s clearly sunny out, or cloudy and gray. Buy a face moisturizer that contains an SPF of at least 15 to protect your face. Or, wear a hat that provides shade.
